Rev. Dr. Gil Rendle, who worked as a consultant for the UMC’s Commission on a Way Forward – will be the keynote speaker of Bishop L. Jonathan Holston’s 2019 Leadership Conference – “What Next? Purposeful Mission in Uncertain Times.”
All South Carolina clergy and laity are invited to join Bishop Holston and The Cabinet as participants at the annual event, scheduled for March 20-22 at St. John’s UMC, 104 Newberry St. NW, Aiken. Registration deadline is March 18.
Rev. Rendle will lead participants through five sessions:
- Addressing the Reality of the Current Situation
- Understanding the Current Culture
- Thinking About What We Can Control
- Focusing on the Mission Rather than the Institution
- What Does God Want to Be Different? (Outcomes-Based Planning)

Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. each day, closing at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday (March 20-21) and at noon Friday (March 22). Continental breakfast and lunch are included each day.

Rev. Rendle retired in 2016 as senior vice president of the Texas Methodist Foundation and has counseled churches on issues of change and leadership as an independent consultant and for more than 30 years. He holds a doctoral degree in organizational and group dynamics and served as senior pastor of two urban UMC congregations in Pennsylvania for 16 years.
He is the author of a number of books, including “Holy Conversations: Strategic Planning as Spiritual Practice for Congregations,” and his most recent, “Quietly Courageous: Leading the Church in a Changing World.”
