Job Description for Central UMC, Newberry
Director of Youth Ministries
- The Director of Youth Ministries has the primary responsibility of helping to provide a well-balanced program for youth (6th-12th grade) that will introduce them to Christ, disciple them in spiritual growth, discover the personal gifts and abilities with which God has blessed them, and to guide and train them in serving Christ with their lives.
- Position requirements shall include:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or progress toward) from an accredited college or university
- Minimum age requirement of 23 years old (due to United Methodist Safe Sanctuaries requirements)
- Experience working with youth in an established successful youth program
- Demonstrate a genuine love, enthusiasm, and ability to maintain an excellent rapport with young people
- Willing to submit to a formal background check and to take training in Safe Sanctuaries
- Knowledge of teachings of the Bible and United Methodist traditions, history and values
- Excellent communication/counseling skills sensitive to the needs of the youth and their parents
- Must be willing to work Sundays and some evenings
- Must be willing to accompany youth on mission trips and retreats periodically
- Must be able to respond to changing needs of the Church and be proficient in current social media and computer technologies
- Duties and Responsibilities to include:
- Establish a presence at the two Sunday worship services and during Sunday School to establish and maintain good working relationship with targeted youth and their parents/guardians, and in other activities where needed (9 am – 12 noon)
- Develop, foster and maintain in church and community/other congregational partnerships as appropriate
- Lead regular weekly Sunday evening youth meetings (6 – 8pm)
- Planning and preparation time each week should be approximately one (1) hour per week
- Lead at least monthly summer events/programs/trips for youth aged individuals (including rising sixth graders)
- To maintain at all times a safe and cooperative environment in which the youth may experience Christ and one another
The Director of Youth Ministries is a member of the staff at Central UMC, Newberry. It is understood that the Director works under the supervision of the Senior Pastor. In the event of the Senior Pastor’s absence, the Staff-Parish Relations Committee chairperson supervises.
