Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, resident bishop of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, issued this statement on Oct. 27, 2018:
At all times, clear communication is important for maintaining trust. For this reason, I want to share that I have received a letter indicating that Christ United Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach has requested to begin a process to withdraw from the denomination.
As resident bishop of the South Carolina Annual Conference, and according to the vows I made during my consecration, I am called to uphold The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church in all matters.
The Book of Discipline outlines the law, doctrine, administration, organizational work and procedures of the United Methodist Church. It delineates the covenant among United Methodists at every level of the church.
Clergy, at the time of their ordination, enter a covenant to remain loyal to the United Methodist Church and commit themselves to be accountable. Laity, in their membership vows, make a covenant to faithfully participate in the ministries of the United Methodist Church by their prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness.
In the days ahead, I ask for your prayers for the members and leaders of Christ United Methodist Church and for the leadership of the South Carolina Annual Conference.
Grace and Peace,
L. Jonathan Holston
